How golf club membership works in Spain

Spanish golf clubs use a range of membership structures that can confuse newcomers. Some clubs — like Club de Golf Escorpión — require you to purchase a acción (share) worth thousands of euros before joining. Others operate with a simple annual fee called an abono or cuota. Public courses like El Saler typically only offer green fees.

Key terms you'll encounter:

  • Socio — a full member, usually paying a monthly or annual fee
  • Abono / cuota — the membership fee (monthly or annual)
  • Acción — a share in the club, required at some private clubs
  • Transeúnte — a non-shareholder member who pays a higher fee
  • Green fee — pay-per-round for visitors
